Is my milk nutritious enough?

Ladies, yes. The answer is always yes. It does not really matter if you had a chocolate for lunch because you forgot your healthy meal at home or could not have your 8 portions of fruit and veg, your milk is always nutritious enough.



Your body knows what to do, just like in pregnancy, your body will use what it has to, to produce milk. Just ensure that you keep hydrated. No Margret, drinking more water will not make more milk, milk supply works on demand and supply, but do keep yourself hydrated.


I recently heard that apparently you should drink milk to make milk? Mmm... so the cow will then need human milk to make cow’s milk for the calf? Or should the cow drink her own milk to produce milk for her calf? I don’t know, this just all seems silly to me. The logic behind some myths is just mind-boggling!

Anyway, I am getting side tracked again. Let’s get back to the nutrition behind your breastmilk. It is true that what you eat influences your breastmilk. Let’s say you had spinach salad 3 times this week, your milk might have a green tinge. Or you tried a new beetroot smoothie and loved it a bit too much, then yes, your milk can look a bit pinkish. If you like spicy food then your breastmilk will taste spicy too, if your baby doesn’t mind, why should Margaret? #Colourofbreastmilk

I am amazed by all the goodness in breastmilk. This is a great source to use if you get confronted about your milk’s ability to nourish your baby. I have heard quite a few times that mothers are concerned about the nutrient content of their milk if their milk looks watery. Please remember that every mother’s milk looks different and your milk will even differ between feeds as the needs of your baby changes. Even if your milk looks watery, it is still nutritious enough for your little one.

If you are ever in doubt, please ask for help from a breastfeeding specialist. Do remember that not all healthcare professionals covered breastfeeding in their curriculum and might not be able to give you the most updated information. Contact a breastfeeding specialist such as a lactation consultant or an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for help.
